We're all X now

It has become common since the financial crisis hit for bloggers to use the phrase "We're all X now". I'm not sure but I think this originated in a widely read Calculated Risk post back in January 2008 titled "We're all subprime now". Since then there have been many different incarnations as the financial crisis has unfolded: "We're all Swedes now", "We're all bankers now", "We're all socialists now" (I even captioned a photo recently with "We're all welfare queens now"). And sure enough, the phrase has spread to other domains, such as "We're all web workers now", "We're all global warmers now", and "We're all journalists now". So it looks to be a gen-u-ine internet meme.

Did this really start with that Calculated Risk post? Or is it actually some cultural reference that I'm not picking up on? Tellingly, there don't seem to be any occurrences from before the CR post, but then again, maybe the CR post took it from somewhere and just popularized it.

After 9/11 the front page of Le Monde said "We are all Americans now" But in French, of course.
