Pilgrims in an unholy land

It's official: on April 10th, Marian and I will be headed to Berlin for a week! Ticket wasn't bad--$500 round trip.

If anyone's been there and can tell me what's good to check out--please do!

PS: I tried to find good footage of that awesome dissolve from the Berlin signpost to the Nazi rally, but alas, none seem to exist on the YouTubes.

Ok this is important. At a certain point you're going to want to take any S-Bahn (except S-41 and S-42) towards the center of town and get off at Hackescher Markt. Exit to the north towards the buildings and fairly soon on a corner to your right you will be confronted with Shark Döner. Now, the amount of kebob places in Berlin is roughly equivalent to the number of Starbucks in the United States of America, but this is the one you want to go to. Once or twice daily and particularly when drunk order the Türkische Pizza "mit Salat komplet und Schaf" and when the guy says "Soße?", look him in the eyes with the utmost confidence and reply, "Knoblauch." Look, no questions please, just do it. Give the man the 2 euro 50 or as much as 3 euros and leave completely satisfied. At the end of the transaction he may ask you if you want it "für heir oder zu mitnehmen" (here or to go?) - that's all up to you. There will be absolutely nothing grammatically correct in this entire transaction but you're going to have to trust me here. You will not regret it.

The second place to go is Friedrichstraße which is nearby. Wandering down this street you may see a guy wearing a jet-pack that may or may not have an umbrella attached. And then you may ask yourself, "Why is that rocketman roasting awesome bratwurst on a grill that is attached to his body and to the jet-pack strapped to his back?" Approach this man and order a Brautwurst "mit Senf." And if all goes to plan he will hand you a roasted sausage in a roll (Brötchen) with spicy mustard. If all really goes to plan you will only hand him one Euro, but I hear he may raise the price to as much as 1.50 in the spring/summer. It's a small price to pay.

Somewhere else there is a really great brunch for 3 Euros but I'll have to remember where that is. In general brunch is a Sunday thing of which all Berliners partake and so there are many around the city.

Enjoy!

I have it at home, but there's a Douglas Coupland book of short essays that talks about Berlin. I will try to find the right bits for you. Helpful, right?
